Südsteiermark Wine Adventure: A Journey of Sip and Savor

Nestled in the heart of Austria, the Südsteiermark region beckons travelers with its rolling vineyards, rich wine culture, and serene landscapes. It's a destination that promises an unforgettable experience for wine and spa aficionados. Our recent trip to Südsteiermark took us on a delightful journey filled with wine, spa relaxation, and culinary indulgence, leaving us with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for this charming region.

Day 1: An Enchanting Start

Our wine adventure began with a stay at the Loisium Hotel, an establishment tailor-made for wine and spa enthusiasts. Upon check-in, we were pleasantly surprised to be invited to a small wine tasting, setting the stage for what was to come.

Upon arrival, we uncorked a bottle of Gelber Muskateller, a delightful white wine that set the tone for our day. With glasses in hand, we mapped out our visits to the local wineries.

After a quick detour to the spa to unwind and rejuvenate, we dined at the hotel's restaurant. The menu offered a great selection of local cuisine, perfectly complemented by an impressive wine list. Our thirst for exploration led us to enjoy a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, followed by a Morillon (the local name for Chardonnay). To cap off the evening on a sweet note, we indulged in a demi bottle of Trockenbeerenauslese, a dessert wine that made for a perfect ending to our first day.

Day 2: Winery Hopping and Fine Dining

Our second day in Südsteiermark began early with a visit to the esteemed winery Tement. We were graciously offered the opportunity to sample their famous wines, with the various Ziereggs stealing the show. One surprising discovery was their Muskateller Frizzante, an underdog that left a lasting impression.

Our next stop was the Winery and Restaurant Sattlerhof. We started with a comprehensive tasting in their tasting room, exploring their entire range of products. The real treat, however, came when we sat down in their fine dining restaurant for lunch. A bottle of 2019 Ried Pfarrweingarten Morillon graced our table, delivering an outstanding wine that elevated our meal to new heights.

Feeling invigorated, we decided to embark on a small hike to our next destination, the Lackner-Tinnacher winery, renowned for their aromatic whites. Despite our exhaustion, the beautiful and bold white wines, from Gelber Muskateller to Sauvignon Blanc to Morillon, reinvigorated our spirits. We couldn't resist trying their housemade digestifs, which added a delightful twist to our visit.

In the evening, feeling tired from our adventures, we decided to enjoy the hotel's amenities, taking a dip in the pool and sauna before returning to the restaurant. It was the perfect opportunity to try dishes we had eyeing the previous day, and once again, we were not disappointed.

Day 3: A Memorable Conclusion

On our final day, we opted to sleep in a little longer before visiting Peter Skoff, a world champion of oaked Sauvignon Blanc. The day unfolded with great food and an exploration of their sophisticated range of wines, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the art of winemaking.

In the evening, we had the pleasure of dining at "Die Weinbank," an outstanding restaurant in the area. The sommelier guided us with perfect wine pairings, and we were even treated to a bottle from Zweytick called November Rain, a poetic end to our Südsteiermark wine journey.

Our trip to Südsteiermark was a symphony of flavors, relaxation, and discovery. The region's wines, gastronomy, and breathtaking landscapes left us with a deep appreciation for this charming part of Austria. If you're seeking a wine adventure that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence, Südsteiermark is a destination that should be at the top of your list. It's a place where every sip and every bite tells a story, and every day is a celebration of the senses.
